Specialist ophthalmologic examination

APPOINTMENTS Specialist eye examination

Although if you do not have problems, it is good to have your eyes checked by specialists who will check the condition of your eyes, if there are any anomalies which would mean the start of some disease. If you have the feeling that your vision is worsening, such examination is even more recommendable.

Detailed specialist examination

On the general eye examination we can discover eventual diseases of the eyes, and also suspicions about some other illnesses in our body. In our center we examine in detail the front and the surface of the eye, eye fundus with retina and measure the eye pressure. If we notice any signs of eye anomalies we perform, regarding the suspicions about the type of the disease, extra specialist eye examinations. For such a detailed eye examination, diagnostic devices which most oculist offices at the opticians’ do not have, and an hour of your time, are needed.

  • Katarina, 42 years,  14. May 2014

In April 2014 I booked an appointment for eye examination and diopter prescription at the Morela Ophthalmologists Eye Center because I, as long-term contact lens user, I had vision problems for the last 6 months, despite regular annual eye examinations. I was very satisfied with the examination in the Morela Ophthalmologists Eye Center. The doctor, Dr. Urša Pečjak took much more time to examine me as I was used to. She examined me in details and asked me about all of my problems with my eyes, and with a lot of patience she measured my diopters and explained to me the source of my problems and what to expect in future. My satisfaction with the examination was completed by the nice administrators at the front desk who ensured that everything went smoothly and without the bad mood although there were a lot of people in the waiting room. I warmly recommend a visit at the Morela Ophthalmologists in Technology Park Brdo in Ljubljana!

Sometimes people get worried for minor eye problems, especially if they already experienced a severe inflammation. For this reason, I am very grateful that on today’s detailed examination at Morela Ophthalmologists they discovered that there is no need to worry and that everything is ok.

Morela Ophthalmologists is the brand I completely trust. More than two decades or even more, our family has been visiting the eye doctor Morela: at first the MOTHER, now the DAUGHTER. My sensitive eyes are in need of constant supervision, not only great eye measurements, but also a nice talk. When – and that is frequent – I visit Morela Ophthalmologists, I get both: great technical and medical knowledge and a warmhearted conversation. I receive what applies for the best: “A good doctor is a good person who knows medicine”.

I also like Morela Ophthalmologists. I visited them in Technology Park in Ljubljana for an examination. They were nice and professional, and Dr. Morela explained to me in details what I was interested in. I really recommend!

Frequency of newly discovered diseases in specialist examination

For a successful treatment, early detection is crucial

Many eye diseases in early phases are not yet discovered. In some cases we can with the prescription of glasses even improve the initial vision worsening. Patients who suffer from keratoconus, glaucoma, macula degeneration or retina detachment too frequently undergo an eye examination only in the phase of aggravation of vision worsening, when in the eye irreparable damage already occurred. So that there would be as little as possible of this cases, regular check-ups at the ophthalmologists’ are recommended to those who wear glasses or contact lenses, and also to those to who was already discovered one of the eye diseases or are treated for an disease which can negatively affect eyes (diabetes, hypertension).

COURSE OF SURGERY PERFORMANCE

  • Eye measurements
    Duration: 10 minutes

On the first visit in our center we will first measure your eye diopter value and eye pressure. If you are wearing glasses we also determine the diopter value of the glasses you are wearing. To those who frequently wear contact lenses, we recommend that they do not wear them at least two days before the visit. It is useful if, in this case, you bring the last report of the ophthalmologist with the data about the prescribed contact lenses.

  • Visual acuity determination
    Duration: 15-30 minutes

A very important part of every eye examination is the determination of visual acuity with and without the correction with glasses. In this way we make sure if the cause for the visual impairment is just the refractive error, eye disease or innate visual impairment (undeveloped vision). This part of the examination is followed by pupil dilation which is obtained with a special medicine in the form of eye drops. In this way we ensure a good examination of deep eye structures, mostly of the eye fundus, i.e. retina. Usually it lasts 15-30 minutes so that the pupil widens enough.

  • Examination with biomicroscope
    Duration: 15 minutes

The doctor after pupil dilatation with the help of a special microscope examines in details all parts of the eye. He examines in details the cornea, eye lens and retina with the macula. According to findings of former measurements and performed eye examination after this proposes the treatment, in some cases also additional specialist examinations. In our center we give special emphasis on a good personal contact between the patient and the doctor. We strive to explain to each patient in details the nature of his/her problems and give advice regarding the treatment.

  • Additional specialist examinations
    Duration: 15 minutes

In some eye diseases and before surgical procedures for eyesight improvement, are required also additional specialist examinations. These are laser eye fundus imaging – OCT, determination of the field of vision, analysis of the corneal structure with topography or pentacam measurement, eye biometry, specular microscopy for the determination of the number and quality of cells in the internal layer of cornea, pachymetry with the corneal thickness measurement, aberrometry for the establishment of the optical aberrations of the eye. All of these examinations are also performed in out center. Some of them can be performed at the same time as the visit at the doctor's, others require an additional visit at our center.

FAQ

What does such examination include?

In a general examination the doctor first measures the refractive error and determines the visual acuity. We always measure the eye pressure and with biomicroscope, the anterior part of the eye is examined, i.e. cornea and eye lens. Pupil dilatation with eye drops and an accurate examination of the fundus of the eye follow. In some diseases some additional examinations are required as the examination of the field of vision, for example laser imaging of the eye fundus. These examinations are not part of a standard examination, but are usually performable within one visit at our center.

Can I drive after the examination?

Approximately two hours after the examination, your eyesight will because of pupil dilatation be a little blurred. During this period of time you are not capable of driving motor vehicles. We recommend to patients to come to such an examination accompanied by someone or to use the public transport.

How often should we visit the ophthalmologist?

There is no general rule. Everything depends on age, already known eye diseases or accompanying general body afflictions, some of which affect also the vision. Regular periodic examinations are recommendable to those who suffer from diabetes, increased eye pressure (glaucoma), in some diseases of the eye fundus (retina), in chronic diseases of cornea (for example keratoconus), and also to regular users of contact lenses.

How much time do I need to undergo the examination?

You will spend approximately an hour in our office. After the diopter value and eye pressure measurements, and the examination of anterior parts of the eye, pupil dilatation with eye drops is necessary, which lasts approximately 15-20 minutes. The examination of the fundus of the eye follows, and in some cases according to findings also other additional examinations.
