Examination for eyeglass or contact lens prescriptions

APPOINTMENTS Examination for eyeglasses or contact lens prescription

When you start to realize that you are constantly straining your eyes and you do not see clearly any more looking at near or far objects, the hope that the eyesight will return on its own is in vain. If beside all of this you suffer also from headaches it is the last time to stop straining your eyes and take care of a correct diopter value measurement.

Diopter value measurement

Examination for glasses is usually part of a complete general oculistic examination, except when it is performed just for the desire for new eyeglasses. In this case it is enough to estimate the visual acuity and determine the diopter value with refractometer. For all of the examinations the most modern equipment which enables very precise measurements is used. The final diopter value for eyeglasses or contact lenses is prescribed according to your subjective judgment of the vision quality which you estimate with trying the correction glasses with different vergence. The final diopter value is measured correctly at our center. You will also decide correctly if you make good use of the knowledge of our opticians at MOOP optical shop and let them help you choose the right glasses and frames, which are the most appropriate for your face and lifestyle.

  • Eye measurements
    Duration: 10 minutes

Similarly, as in the examination because of other eye problems, in the case of examination for eyeglasses or contact lens prescription, we firstly measure the diopter value and eye pressure. In those who already wear eyeglasses, we determine also the diopter value of the eyeglasses they are already wearing. To those who already wear contact lenses we advise not to wear them at least two days before the examination. It is useful if, in this case, you bring the last report of the last eye examination with the data about the prescribed contact lenses.

  • Visual acuity determination
    Duration: 10 minutes

For the determination of your visual acuity, it is very important its determination with and without the correction eyeglasses. In this way we make sure if the cause for the visual impairment is just the refractive error, eye disease or innate visual impairment (undeveloped vision). In the case of the latter two, this usually requires a specialist ophthalmologic examination, with which the cause of poor vision is clarified.

  • Eye examination
    Duration: 10 minutes

In eyeglasses or contact lens prescription, eye examination with biomicroscope is always performed. With this examination we estimate the state of cornea which is especially important in those who frequently use contact lenses. During the examination we always talk about the expectations and needs of every individual regarding their eyesight. In this way we can give advice to everyone in the best way we can with the types of correction glasses and in choosing the right contact lenses.

  • Vision evaluation with test eyeglasses or lenses
    Duration: 10 minutes

Before the final eyeglasses or contact lens prescription we usually evaluate the patient's vision with test eyeglasses. With vision testing in different conditions of lighting and in looking to a different distance as in movement we can get a much more reliable data about the suitability of a chosen diopter value for eyeglass production.

What is the main difference between soft, semi-hard and hard lenses?

The difference between them is in the type of the material that they are made from. Soft lenses are made from the material which is the most oxygen-permeable and for this reason are the most comfortable for wearing. This lenses are used by 99 percent of contact lens users. Semi-hard lenses are less oxygen-permeable and are used mostly in patients who suffer from keratoconus and have a high degree of astigmatism which can not be corrected with soft lenses. Hard lenses are not used any more because they were replaced by semi-hard lenses.

Which lens is the most suitable for me?

We can not answer this question in advance and there is no general answer. People are different, everyone has different needs, and this is why the most appropriate contact lenses for every individual are chosen on the basis of an eye examination and of a talk about their lifestyle.

Can I use soft contact lenses if I suffer from astigmatism?

Yes. There are different daily, two weekly and monthly disposable soft contact lenses with astigmatism correction.

What is the risk if I use two weekly lenses for one month?

With a longer use of contact lenses, their oxygen permeability decreases, and more and more proteins and lipids from teardrops accumulate which increases the risk for bacterial cornea infection. Because of a worse provision of oxygen to cornea, chronic changes as the spread of thin veins, which gradually damage the cornea, can occur. In this way the body tries to improve the provision of oxygen to this tissue. We can not see this with the naked eye but it can be perfectly seen with the microscope in many long-term lens users.
